Stephanie White has been appointed as the head coach of the Indiana Fever for the second time, rejoining a team that reached the WNBA playoffs in 2024 for the first time in eight years.

At 47, White is a basketball legend in Indiana. She has received top honors in high school basketball, won a national championship in college, and played professionally for her home-state team.

White played for the Fever from 2000 to 2004, served as an assistant coach for their 2012 WNBA championship team, and was the head coach of the Indiana Fever from 2015 to 2016.

Here’s more about Stephanie White’s background.

Who did Stephanie White play for?
After being selected in the second round of the 1999 WNBA Draft, White played one season for the Charlotte Sting, averaging 5.3 points per game. The franchise, which later became the Miami Sol, traded her to the Indiana Fever. White played four seasons for the Fever from 2000-2004, averaging 6.1 points per game, though she missed the 2002 season due to injury.

White joined the Fever’s coaching staff in 2011, contributing to their 2012 WNBA championship victory. She became the team’s head coach in 2015, leading them to two playoff appearances before moving on to the coaching role at Vanderbilt.

Making a move: Fever part ways with coach Christie Sides after two seasons.

What is Stephanie White doing now?
For the past two seasons, White has served as the head coach of the Connecticut Sun, compiling a 55-25 record and leading the team to the second round of the WNBA playoffs each year. She previously coached the Indiana Fever from 2015 to 2016, where she posted a 37-31 record and won the Eastern Conference championship in 2015. However, the Fever lost to the Minnesota Lynx in the 2015 WNBA Finals in a five-game series.

Where did Stephanie White go to school?
White played at Purdue University from 1995 to 1999, where she scored 2,182 points (third in program history), along with 667 rebounds, 578 assists (second), and 277 steals (sixth). She was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior when Purdue won the national championship under coach Carolyn Peck. During her time at Purdue, White averaged 10.8 points per game as a freshman, 16.4 as a sophomore, 20.6 as a junior, and led the Big Ten with 20.2 points per game as a senior, along with 43.7% shooting from three-point range.

    Stephanie White’s high school career
White set a state record with 2,869 career points at Seeger High School from 1991 to 1995, a total that currently ranks fourth in Indiana state history. She was awarded Indiana’s Miss Basketball title in 1995. During her senior year, she averaged 36.9 points per game, including a remarkable 66-point game.
