Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could be without two important first-team players this weekend, with Riccardo Calafiori and Martin Zubimendi both entering Saturday’s clash against Aston Villa one booking away from suspension. The Gunners travel to Villa Park determined to protect their lead at the top of the Premier League, but disciplinary risks may complicate Arteta’s plans.
Arsenal re-established a five-point advantage at the summit on Wednesday night after a controlled 2–0 victory over Brentford. While Arteta’s side kept pace in the title race, Aston Villa climbed to third by beating Brighton in a dramatic seven-goal encounter, further intensifying the stakes ahead of the sides’ meeting.
With only six points separating the league leaders from Unai Emery’s in-form team — and Manchester City positioned between them — Saturday’s match carries significant weight in the broader context of the season. Yet as Arsenal prepare for a demanding festive stretch, Arteta must balance intensity with caution.
Yellow Card Tightrope
Calafiori has accumulated four yellow cards in Premier League action this season, while Zubimendi has received three. Under league regulations, any player who reaches five bookings within the first 19 matches receives an automatic one-game suspension. Reaching ten cautions before the 32-match mark triggers a two-game ban.
Importantly for Arteta, yellow cards issued in the league do not carry over into domestic cup competitions, including the Carabao Cup. Nonetheless, a suspension in the coming weeks would be far from ideal as Arsenal navigate a packed schedule.

Speaking after the Brentford win, Arteta reiterated his concerns about the relentless schedule affecting top teams across Europe.
“It’s probably not just one thing,” he told reporters. “But we can help the players and everyone in the league by giving them another day when possible — especially for teams playing so much in Europe.
“We’ve never had a schedule like this, not only domestically but internationally as well. At some point, it becomes too much. The players are not machines. We have to try to manage it when we can.”
