COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— The University of Michigan has fired head football coach Sherrone Moore after an internal investigation found he had an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member, a violation of school policy. Moore, who went 9–3 this season, was dismissed with cause, meaning the school owes no buyout on his five-year contract. Hours after the firing, Moore was taken into custody for “potential charges,” though none have yet been filed. Biff Poggi will serve as Michigan’s interim head coach as the Wolverines prepare for the Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl against Texas.
MLB
— The Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million contract with slugger Pete Alonso. The 31-year-old Alonso hit .272 with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs for the Mets this season and became the franchise’s all-time home run leader in August. New York did not make him an offer after he opted out of his contract.
NBA
— Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 28 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder dominated the Phoenix Suns 138-89, tying the NBA record for best start with a 24-1 mark. The Thunder set a franchise record with their 16th straight win and advanced to the NBA Cup semifinals, facing the Spurs on Saturday. Phoenix struggled without injured star Devin Booker, shooting just 39%, while Thunder’s defense held them to a season-low point total. Chet Holmgren scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Thunder.
— Stephon Castle scored 21 of his 30 points in the second half as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 132-119 in an NBA Cup quarterfinal. Luka Doncic scored 35 points and LeBron James had 19 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for the Lakers, who lost for only the third time in 12 games. Marcus Smart scored a season-high 26 points with eight 3-pointers for the Lakers, and Austin Reaves had 15 points.
NFL
— The NFL wants to create a practice squad of officials and base postseason assignments on performance, not seniority, league executive Troy Vincent said Wednesday. The league also seeks mandatory training for lower-performing officials and more offseason communication to improve officiating. Expanded replay review for more plays is planned for 2026. The referees’ union opposes removing seniority from postseason decisions and ending the probationary period. Negotiations on a new officials’ contract continue.
— Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert says postgame X-rays on his fractured left hand were “clean for the most part,” calling Monday night’s tests after the win over Philadelphia precautionary. Herbert, who had surgery a week earlier, was limited in Wednesday’s practice but still rushed for 66 yards against the Eagles and produced three first downs on scrambles. He admitted he played “uncharacteristically,” throwing for just 139 yards with an interception and a fumble. The 9-4 Chargers visit Kansas City on Sunday looking to sweep the season series vs. the 6-7 Chiefs.
— Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will miss Sunday’s game against the New York Giants due to a reinjury to his left elbow. Daniels aggravated the injury in last Sunday’s 31-0 loss to the Vikings, but doctors found no structural damage. Daniels was pulled late in the game with the score already lopsided, and the team hopes he can return next week against the Eagles. This will be Daniels’ seventh missed game this season due to various injuries.
WNBA
— A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces has been named The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for 2025. Wilson won her unprecedented fourth WNBA MVP and led the Aces to their third championship in four seasons. The 29-year-old averaged 23 points per game, leading Las Vegas to the No. 2 seed and a playoff sweep of Phoenix in the Finals. Wilson also became the first player in WNBA or NBA history to win MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Finals MVP, and lead the league in scoring all in the same season.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— The NCAA has ruled former San Francisco guard Marcus Williams ineligible after determining he shared inside information about his expected game statistics with former Fresno State player Mykell Robinson, who used the details to place prop bets on daily fantasy sites. Investigators found text messages showing Williams provided information before at least nine games last season. Robinson was previously declared permanently ineligible for his role in a separate prop-bet scheme. The case is part of a wider NCAA crackdown, with more than a dozen players ruled ineligible this year and about 30 current and former men’s basketball players under investigation for potential betting violations.
