HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Quarterback Geno Smith, who was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders nearly a month ago, has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $75 million contract extension, according to ESPN. This new contract will keep Smith with the Raiders through the 2027 season and guarantees him $66.5 million.
Smith was acquired by the Raiders from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a third-round draft pick on March 7. However, the two sides did not immediately finalize an extension. Despite having one year remaining on his previous contract, general manager John Spytek expressed confidence at the NFL meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, this week that an agreement would be reached soon.
“We’re excited to have him not only for this season but for the years ahead,” Spytek said during the meetings. “Once we finalize the contract details, he’ll be a part of this team for the long term. I’m confident that it will all come together in the near future.”
In the previous season, Smith passed for 4,320 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions while playing for Seattle.
The 34-year-old, who has earned two Pro Bowl selections, will now reunite with first-year Raiders head coach Pete Carroll. Carroll, who played a crucial role in reviving Smith’s career in 2019 when he gave him a fresh opportunity in Seattle, is hopeful that the quarterback can continue his successful journey with the Raiders.
Smith’s career had seen a few setbacks before his time in Seattle. He lost his starting job with the New York Jets and also spent one season each with the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers. However, Carroll provided Smith with an opportunity to start in 2022, and the quarterback responded by leading the league with a 69.8% completion rate. That season, Smith threw for 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His performance earned him the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award.
During his three seasons with the Seahawks, Smith led the team to winning records in each year.
